Summer Nights At The Bandstand is a yearly music festival held in Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow. It is the result of the renovation of a beautiful Victorian bandstand that was out of use and dilapidated for many years and is now a Glasgow icon.
The aim with this project was to create a poster that would capture the festival's summery outdoor feeling, be instantly recognisable and highly legible.
I used the imagery of the bandstand itself prominently on the poster to make it more recognisable. The building is very well known in Glasgow so when most people see the poster they will quickly understand that it is advertising a concert. The shape of the roof is especially recognisable and also creates a strong compositional element in the design to anchor the text above. To convey the night-time atmosphere of the festival I placed stars in the sky.
I wanted to capture the feeling of being outdoors in the warm air of summer while the sun slowly sets during the concert, so for the background I used a colour gradient going from the yellow of the setting sun to the dark blue of the night sky.
For typography I prioritised legibility because I felt it was important for the viewer to easily be able to read the information at a distance. I kept things simple by using only two fonts - Futura Bold and Optima Extra Black. Both are very bold and easily legible fonts. Futura is a plainer font so I used it for the majority of the design, while for the heading I used Optima, which has a bit more character.
